Mendell Fritz, 59, will be 70 years old before he is first eligible for parole, but now he will face new charges for assault to do great bodily harm to another state prisoner.The Branch County Prosecutor charged him with the 10-year felony after a stabbing incident in the yard area of Lakeland Prison Nov. 9.Fritz told Michigan State Police he acted in self defense when he walked up on Dennis Shepler and stabbed him with a sharpened piece of metal called a shank.
